Our January newsletter is now available.
Here’s a summary of the NLFF January 2025 Newsletter:
Key Events & Announcements
- Annual General Meeting (AGM): Scheduled for January 14th, 2026, at 7:30 PM at Queen Mary Park Hall. Seven executive positions need filling, and a proxy form is provided for those unable to attend.
- Research Presentation: On January 28th, ACA biologist Jason Blackburn will present findings from electrofishing on the Oldman and Livingstone rivers.
Major Projects & Conservation
- Project Funding: Over the past 13 years, NLFF has received $416,000 in grants for various conservation efforts. For 2026, the club has opted not to apply for new grants, as existing work (like the Goldeye/Mooneye study) is under budget or can be covered internally.
- Wabamun Whitewood Site: The Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is acquiring 3,200 acres of former coal mining land near Edmonton for conservation. Plans include stocking splake (a brook/lake trout hybrid) and cutthroat trout starting in late 2027.
- Ongoing Initiatives: The club continues to support Arctic Grayling conservation, “Kids Can Catch” events, and fly-fishing education.
Fishing Tips & Health

- AI Fly Recommendations: The newsletter features advice from ChatGPT on the best flies for Alberta brown trout, highlighting the Woolly Bugger, Hare’s Ear Nymph, and Adams dry fly.
- Health Benefits: Fishing is promoted as a way to improve cardiovascular health, boost Vitamin D, and provide meditative mental health benefits.
