For almost 80 years, Lloyd Shea was an ardent fly fisherman, hunter and advocate for conservation. He worked tirelessly for organizations like the Alberta Fish and Game Association, Alberta Fly Fishers, Edmonton Trout Fishing Club and Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) to improve fisheries in Alberta. After Lloyd passed away, Dave Johnston of The Fishin’ Hole proposed that the Edmonton Chapter of TUC hold raffles to raise money for conservation projects. Your efforts in events like this have enabled The Northern Lights Fly Tyers – Trout Unlimited Edmonton to be recognized for their excellent record of supporting conservation of Alberta’s fisheries and recreational angling.

National Recreational Fisheries Award

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) developed the National Recreational Fisheries Award program to honour individuals and organizations for their contribution to the conservation, restoration and enhancement of Canada’s recreational fisheries and their habitat. These individuals and organizations have played, and continue to play, a very important role in sustaining and developing the recreational fishing experience throughout Canada.

NLFT/TU Edmonton will be receiving one of these awards.
The Northern Lights Flytyers – Trout Unlimited  Edmonton are being recognized for their excellent record of supporting  conservation of Alberta’s fisheries and recreational angling.  Your group’s  volunteer involvement through the promotion of fly tying and fly fishing,  especially to youth, and your contributions to “Casting for Life” and “Healing  Waters” are impressive. Finally, the Northern Lights Fly Tyers work on Arctic Grayling populations will help to ensure that recreational fisheries in Alberta  are sustainable for future generations.
Department officials will be organizing an Awards ceremony to be held in your local area.  You will be contacted at a later date to make suitable arrangements for the participation of representatives of  your organization.
Please accept my sincere congratulations on this significant achievement.
Yours sincerely,
Keith Ashfield
Minister of Fisheries and Oceans
